The Entitled Hand, 2021
Oil on canvas, 200cm x 150cm, accompanied by a mirror ball and blue spotlight.
Examining the darker sides of clubbing: this installation portrays a hand emerging from the darkness to grope the fabric of the canvas, while the light of the mirrorball brushes across the painting.
After installing in the exhibition space, I decided to create some digital edits. I cleaned up the background, played around with the use of space within the piece and superimposed mirrorball- like lighting onto the piece.
Progress shots
Initially, I wanted to portray the hand explicitly grabbing a female form. However, throughout the painting process, I decided to create a more ambiguous subject in which the groping hand was exposed by itself. In this way, the piece hopefully becomes more relatable and places all focus on the perpetrator.
